Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Which Is Best For Ecommerce?

Trying to decide between Klaviyo vs Activecampaign for your ecommerce business?

I run an agency that specializes in email marketing for ecommerce brands, so I’ve been through the rounds looking at what is best for Shopify store owners. This includes comparing Klaviyo vs Activecampaign, which seems to be a pretty popular question.

I can tell you right now though, there is a clear choice.

Let’s talk about it…

Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Pricing 

My advice when it comes to email service providers is to think of value, not price. 

In other words, the real question between Klaviyo and Activecampaign is not which is more expensive, but which is going to make you more money. Because ultimately, you’re investing money to make even more money. 

Still, everyone is on some type of budget.

So if you’re just starting out, you’ll be glad to know that you can start with Klaviyo for free for the first 250 subscribers. It comes with a limit of 500 sends though. So if you have 250 subscribers, you’ll only be able to send 2 emails. But at that point, even those 2 emails will cover your costs.

Once you get past the free trial though, things ramp up fast.

Got 1,000 subscribers? It’s $30/month.

Got 10,000 subscribers? It’s $150/month

With Activecampaign, there is a 14-day free trial. 

If you want to become a paying customer as soon as possible though, then it’s $9/month for up to 500 subscribers. And because you’re a paying customer, there are no limitations. So you can send as many emails you want during the early stages.

Like Klaviyo though, pricing ramps up fast depending on your subscriber list.

Got 1,000 subscribers? It’s $30/month – $229/month.

Got 10,000 subscribers? It’s $125/month – $399/month

For the most part, you won’t have to worry about those higher pricing tiers. You can stick on their smallest packages, which will be the $30/month-$125/month price ranges.


Klaviyo and Activecampaign seem to be almost identical when it comes to pricing, so it’s really too close to call. So I’m going to call this round a tie.

Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Segmentation

Hyperspecific segmentation rules are what drive most ecommerce profits with email…

Klaviyo boasts the absolute best segmentation features for ecommerce business owners in the entire market. Whether you want to be specific on behavioral data or transactional data, Klaviyo allows you for either one or even both.

So whether you want to segment VIP customers or set up a “sunset flow”, you can do so.

Klaviyo blows everything else out of the water.

Activecampaign just doesn’t keep up with Klaviyo when it comes to segmentation, which is a real shame. While there are some segmentation features, you can’t go nearly as specific as Klaviyo can, which means you’re losing a ton of potential money.


Klaviyo and it’s not even close.

You save a couple of bucks by signing up for Activecampaign, but you’ll make way less than if you just signed up to Klaviyo and took advantage of their segmentation features.

Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Automation

You can’t have a profitable email marketing operation without good automation.

Enter Klaviyo.

Klaviyo calls their automation “flows”. And like some email service providers, they’ve decided to use a drag & drop interface for these flows. That makes it really simple and easy to see exactly how you’re taking customers through the customer journey. 

Heck, Klaviyo even comes with pre-made emails you can use if you’re just starting out.

Now, let’s move on to Activecampaign.

They’re also strong with their automations. They have all the triggers you can ask for. But the most impressive feature they have is something they call an “automation map”, which is basically a visual way to see your automations and how the customer journey looks like.

This is really useful as you can see and fix any drop offs in your funnel.



While Klaviyo doesn’t have the “automation map” that Activecampaign has, it has everything you need to scale an ecommerce business while also making it a lot easier to set up flows in the first place.

Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Reporting & Analytics

Reporting is key to all email marketing efforts. The better your reporting and analytics, the more profitable you can be with email marketing. So if anything falters here, it affects the entire system.

Klaviyo is a clear winner here.

The dashboard is perfectly balanced to show you the exact stuff any ecommerce business owner wants to know about the overall health of their email marketing operation. More importantly though, Klaviyo is the king of in-depth email marketing analytics.

With Klaviyo you can pinpoint your most and least profitable customers.

You can also more easily find the types of emails and the overall strategies you used to turn low performing customers into brand evangelists. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to see you spend hours within Klaviyo’s analytics because it’s that in-depth and interesting to analyze.

Activecampaign is a clear second here.

Like Klaviyo, you’ll get access to your basic analytics. You’ll also get some more advanced analytic option you can dive into. However, it’s not like Klaviyo. Just one look and you’ll notice a very obvious difference in quality between both softwares.

This is mostly due to Activecampaign not being for ecommerce businesses.


Klaviyo is the king of email marketing reporting and analytics.

Activecampaign just can’t compete here, which means it just won’t make you as much money as Klaviyo can.

Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Usability & UI

The best email service provider would also have the most efficient, easy-to-use, and convenient usability software, right?

You would think that, but some just flat out fail here.

Luckily, Klaviyo wins… huge.

While there is a slight learning curve, it’s not a big deal. Once you get used to it, you’ll notice that Klaviyo was built to handle data like nothing else in the market for ecommerce business owners. 

Right on the dashboard, you get all the vital data points for your business.

As for actually sending emails, it’s really straightforward. The whole process goes step-by-step and it’s pretty intuitive. It’s like riding a bike. Once you practice a bit by sending a few emails, you’ll never forget how to do it again

I’ve used Klaviyo for years and I’ve never needed to code anything either.

Activecampaign also does pretty well when it comes to their overall usability and user interface. However, it’s just flat out not as slick as Klaviyo.

There is a bigger learning curve, especially when it comes to their more advanced features. Plus, you’re going to spend some time figuring out what you can ignore because it is bloated up by features that ecommerce business owners don’t really need to worry about such as lead scoring.

Some Activecampaign features are dependent on others too.

This just means that if you want to use one feature, sometimes it needs another feature to already be in use. This is not a huge deal, but it can slow down some of your steps, which can be a little annoying, especially if you’re in a hurry.


Klaviyo is a big winner here.

You get all the data you need. Campaigns are really easy to send. And overall, it’s just an easy experience that you can pick up relatively quickly. 

Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Integrations

Integrations are a key part to making money with email marketing because without them, it would become extremely difficult to do anything. In other words, you need good integrations to have a profitable email marketing operation.

With Klaviyo, you get an email service provider that integrates with any ecommerce-related app you can possibly think of. In fact, you could say that Klaviyo was practically built to be layered on Shopify because the ease of use and amount of data transferred is next level.

This is one of the perks of working with an ESP that specializes in ecommerce.

Activecampaign also is loaded with integration options, 150+ to be exact. 

Now, if you’re wondering if Activecampaign integrates with Shopify….

Yes! Yes, it does.

However, because Activecampaign wasn’t built specifically for ecommerce businesses, you’re not going to have as much of an exhausted integration list as you would with Klaviyo. So you’ve got the Shopify store integration, but you might miss out on some integrations you wish you could have.

Still, it’s a pretty solid list that would work with new Shopify stores.


Klaviyo wins because it was specifically designed to work with all things ecommerce. You might be able to get away with Activecampaign for a bit when starting out, but you’ll feel the difference if you’re a bigger, more established ecommerce brand.

Klaviyo vs Activecampaign: Customer Support

It doesn’t matter what email service provider you use, something is going to go wrong.

Whether it’s a minor problem or a huge urgent thing that needs to fixed right now, customer support is pretty much going to be the difference maker during your time of need.

So how does Klaviyo fair when it comes to customer support?

I give them a perfect 10/10.

First, they have a really in-depth help center. Second, they have a strong email and chat support system that goes above and beyond any other support I’ve seen. They’re fast and always seem to know the exact thing to say and when to say it. 

Activecampaign also has a really strong customer support system.

You can pretty much reach them throughout the week through both email and live chat. They also have their own support center and training videos to help you with the most common technical problems people face with Activecampaign.


It’s a tie.

Both Klaviyo and Activecampaign are at the top of their game when it comes to their customer support teams.

Is Klaviyo Better Than Activecampaign For Ecommerce?


In almost every scenario, Klaviyo is a much better solution than Activecampaign if you’re trying to build an ecommerce business. This all comes down to the fact that Klaviyo was built specifically for online store owners, while Activecampaign was originally built as a CRM for sales teams.

So if you’re trying to make more money with an ecommerce email marketing funnel, choose Klaviyo.

I believe in this so much that I only work with clients that are actively using Klaviyo. If they’re not, I literally pass on that account even if it means losing out on guaranteed money. I’m not even exaggerating.

That’s how valuable I think Klaviyo is.

You won’t regret it.
